New Theme Park Ride System Lets Fans Drive Under The Sea

How would you like to go on a submarine ride where you actually get wet?

Yeah, that sounds like an awful idea, at first. No one wants to be trapped in a sinking sub, wondering when your air is going to run out. That's not a theme park ride. It's a nightmare.

But what if you weren't sinking? What if you were safely dry from the chest up, with plenty of air to breathe, while water passed around you from the chest down? It'd be more like combining a diving helmet with a track ride.
AquaCar

That's what a company called Sub Sea Systems is offering with its new ride system, the Aquaticar, that it will show at an upcoming trade show in Dubai.
The two-person cars have height adjustable seating and a waterproof canopy that covers the riders' upper bodies, providing an air bubble for them during their underwater adventure. The car descends into an underwater pool, through which drivers drive on an customizable track as they go through any variety of environments or show scenes. Guests can steer the vehicle, but can't go off the defined track.

The propulsion system for the ride is pretty neat, too. Air registers embedded in the ride track release air into the vehicle as it passes over. That airflow not only fills the canopy, it also powers the car's "Bubble Engine," turning the car's wheels for a ride speed of about two miles per hour.

Aqua Fun features an obstacle course with slides, ramps, bridges, steps, jumps, balloons, monkey bars - and is a good option for those who are after an energetic day out on the water. With a capacity for 250 people, the waterpark, which spells I ❤ AD, is on the Corniche, adjacent to the St Regis and Hilton hotels. The Abu Dhabi park's opening coincides with the Mother of the Nation Festival, March 22 to 31, and has special prices to celebrate. It will cost Dh100 for access and you can stay on it as long as you like, or rather, as long as you can (we have tried the similar park in Dubai, and it was harder work than a Crossfit class). Life jackets are provided and staff are on hand to help you back up if (when) you fall in. There are seven lifeguards in different stations on the park at all times. Aqua Fun, the b
